Banners can have up to 6 pattern layers stacked on top of a base color. Each layer adds a pattern in a chosen color. Patterns are applied using a Loom block or through commands.
Crafting a Loom
Place 2 String + 2 Planks in a 2x2 crafting grid. The Loom lets you apply one pattern at a time to a banner using dyes. Some special patterns require a Banner Pattern item (crafted from paper + specific items).

Banner Uses
Banners work as decoration, map markers (place on a cartography table with a map), and shield designs (combine banner + shield on a crafting table, Java Edition only).
