How Nether Portal Coordinates Work
The Nether is exactly 8 times smaller than the Overworld. This means every block you walk in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld. Nether portals use this ratio to calculate their linked position.
The Formula
- Overworld to Nether: Divide X and Z by 8
- Nether to Overworld: Multiply X and Z by 8
- The Y coordinate (height) doesn't change between dimensions
Building Aligned Portals
- Note your Overworld portal coordinates (press F3)
- Use the calculator above to get the Nether coordinates
- Enter the Nether through your portal
- Travel to the calculated coordinates
- Build a second portal at those exact coordinates
- Both portals will now link perfectly
Pro Tip
Use aligned portals to build a Nether highway for fast travel. At 8:1 ratio, you can travel 800 blocks in the Overworld by walking just 100 blocks in the Nether.
Common Issues
- Portal links to wrong location: The game finds the nearest existing portal within 128 blocks. Remove any other portals nearby.
- Portal generates in a cave: Build the portal above ground at the calculated coordinates. The game won't create a new one if yours is within range.
- Two portals linking to same Nether portal: Overworld portals within 1,024 blocks (128 x 8) share a Nether portal. Build them further apart or manually build separate Nether portals.
